We Are The Fallen

I went to Noise In The Basement, mostly to check out We Are The Fallen. Apparently they had some technical issues so everything got started late. Saw some local bands. Kill Betty. Loud. Then there was some band that looked and kinda sounded like Green Day. Nothing really struck me.

I wasn’t really expecting much from We Are The Fallen. For those of you who don’t know, these guys are basically Evanescence with Carly Smithson of American Idol fame on vocals. They also added Marty O’Brien on bass. And I’ve heard there first single on the radio, “Bury Me Alive,” which definitely sounds like Evanescence got a new, singer and is kinda doing the same thing. So I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of them. Not that I hated Evanescence or anything, but it wasn’t anything amazing. What I found
after their first song or two, is that this isn’t Evanescence. In fact, I will not mention that name again. Cause these We Are The Fallen folks rock. Yeah I know, unfortunately on the cd they are probably not as heavy as they were last night, but man did they put on a show for me. There were a few moments when I was reminded of that other band that I’m not gonna say anymore, but most of this is it’s own creation. Ben Moody (lead guitar - We Are The Fallen and co-founder of that other band) said in an interview "We cannot try to be who we are. If there is some similarity in sound, it's because that genre was created by us." So there is some similar sound and that’s understandable. But what there new members bring to the table is much better. I don’t think Carly is as vocally talented as Amy Lee, but I think she fit’s the band so much better. She’s got a grittier sound at times, and I think leads to the overall heaviness of the band. I feel like Amy felt because of her amazing voice, that everything had to be operatic when she sang. Well Carly just blasts it. The first few songs were heavy, rhythmic. Really caught me off guard since I was expecting something bandi’mnotgonnamention-esque. Then out of nowhere they did a cover of Madonna’s “Like A Prayer.” Now you can say what you want about me, but I’ve always liked that song. I don’t even know why. There is just something about it that grabs me. And it’s always been kinda dark, and edgy. Well after hearing the live cover version done by these guys, all I could think was ‘damn, that song was begging to have that done to it.’ It was dark, edgy, and now evil too. They slowed it down for the next one, and sounded a little more like that other band. Couple more decent tunes, and then I hear some familiar music. I said ‘this song sounds a lot like Journey.’ Well that’s because it was. They did a cover of “Separate Ways.” I’ve caught flak in the past for telling people that this song rocks. They give me the whole journey sucks, bla bla bla, they are soft shit. Well I’m sorry but the guitar in that song fuckin rocks. And these guys did it justice. Carly was no Steve Perry, but it was heavy and I still stand by my statement that that song rocks.

Unfortunately, I needed to get home on a Monday night and didn’t get to hang out to try and chat with the band after the show, but I was quite impressed watching them perform. All this talk about Carly, I don’t wanna forget to mention one of the best parts of them live is watching their bassist perform. I’m not sure I have ever seen a bass player make it look so cool. I’m not even sure what he was doing, but it looked slick and definitely made it fun to watch. I would suggest they drop the “We Are” and just go with “The Fallen,” just for ease of talkin about them. The jury is still out as to how they will sound recorded, but as for seeing them live, they sold me. This is NOT that other band.

They were just "The Fallen" to begin with, but another band is currently performing under the same name and this caused some legal trouble. As a result they changed the name to "We Are the Fallen."
