The Devil's Carnival

You may be asking "What is The Devils Carnival?" My immediate answer would be it's awesome, followed by it's also an experimental horror film brought to us by Terrance Zdunich and Darren Lynn Bousman the brains behind the ever so entertaining Repo: The Genetic Opera. Darren Lynn Bousman is also the director of the empire that is the Saw movies (2, 3 & 4).

The evening started in a very long line at the Charles Theater in downtown Baltimore - fortunately Mikey and I were in the front. It was there that we stood and waited for about an hour and a half before let in to the theater. But standing in line wasn't awful; in fact it was quite entertaining. The fans of these movies are very dedicated. We saw amazing costumes and meet some very interesting people who were very excited to see The Devils Carnival. The carnival staff also kept us entertained by taking lots of pictures and video, Mikey even got a short on camera interview about his thoughts on getting ready to see the film. He was also asked if he had any special talents - you will have to look out for the video to find out what he does. Anyhow, all the excitement in line just heightened the desire to get into the show!

Finally, the line starts moving and we get placed in a movie theatre. I was little confused. I was not expecting an actual movie. But a movie is we what we got, and the next 90 minutes would be a ride into hell (hey it's The Devil's Carnival after all). We sat in our seats and immediately noticed this show could have been held at a bigger venue. It was totally sold out; in fact people were sitting in the isle steps (the director and actors commented later how they loved people were sitting in the aisles.) The lights went down and the MC came out dressed as a ring master. She introduced a lovely woman, who came out to the Addams Family theme music dress as Wednesday. All covered up with pig tails. She did a little dance for the crowd including disrobing down to a flashy bra and panties number. After the dance the MC brought out the director and two of the actors. They announced that before the film we would see some backstage footage of Repo. Everyone was very happy about that. The backstage footage showed the cast having fun with each other, and provided some great behind the scenes footage, of what it took to bring Repo to life. Following the backstage footage was an audience costume contest. Actress Briana Evigan who played Ms. Merrywood in the film was there to help with the contest.

Now the movie starts and I really don't want to give too much away because everyone should see this film. But here is the idea...The devil has a carnival - ok you probably got that part but here's the fun part it's not only is it his carnival but he's also the story teller. Basically, it follows three stories where the individuals wake to find themselves in The Devils Carnival. As Lucifer is reading the stories they are being acted and sung out on screen. They are being lead around the carnival and ultimately all meet their death for their sins. The images and costumes are very well done especially Lucifer. Terrance later told us during the Q & A that it took four hours to get into and an hour to get out of everyday. I also enjoyed Emilie Autumns character which was a The Painted Doll. The images were scary and definitely something some people's nightmares are made out of. If the hobos don't scare you the clowns sure will. The music in the movie was very well composed, people in the audience were already singing along. I enjoy a good dark musical number - not like Glee, but along the Terrance Zdunich's line. The lyrics are so creepy and dark. It's great just listening to them on their own but when you have the images to go with it it's so much cooler. Again, I don't want to give away too much of the movie so I will say this if you love Repo and Saw...YOU WILL LOVE THIS! There's not too much else to say besides how cool, creepy, dark, spooky and over all entertaining The Devils Carnival was. I look forward to the next TDC films. We were informed that there will be at least 3, and we should keep an eye out for Sarah Brightman's return!

After the film finished there was a roar of applause. Terrance and Darren came out to answer some questions from the audience. Below are a few questions and answers.

The question everyone wanted to know...Will there be a Repo 2 - No, the duo no longer own the rights to the movie. Lionsgate does now own them and Darren is simply tired of begging them to let him make another Repo. They are just focusing on the TDC because its 100% theirs.

Did Terrance have his whole body covered in make up? Apparently so, saying he had to shave places he never thought he would.

How long did it take to film? 7 days (wow)

Be on the look our for Bousemans's new film "Mother's Day"
