1 Night,1 Show,1 Cause Benefit for the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center

Join PRS Guitars on Sunday, October 3 at Bourbon Street Baltimore to raise money for the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. One really cool fundraiser is the live auction of custom painted PRS guitars. I asked Daniel Stuelpnagel, curator of the guitar collection, to describe the process behind creating these one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

Daniel: As an amateur guitar player, I am familiar with the assembly so I was comfortable removing the tuners, strings, bridge, plug jack and a few other accessories so that I could get tape and paint coverage on the body and have it look as much like a factory paint job as possible.  I used Montana spray paint, overlapping tape applications to create about five or six layers as you can see, in a geometric abstract pattern with many colors, and then I hit it with two coats of clear coat at the end, each application needs to dry for a day or two, so I spent a good couple of weeks just working on this about an hour a day, and then put it all back together and re-strung it and it was ready to go.  Close to the style I use for many of my paintings on canvas, of which I have done about five hundred over the years, and more than 70 exhibitions coast to coast, but this was my first guitar.

September 11th is a day that will ring out in our minds each time it comes around.  This years date will be no different.  The spirit of those individuals that gave up the prospect of protecting their own safety to insure that others could make it out of such a terrible situation, is what the celebration is all about.

Rock For Sarah is a benefit held every year in honor of Sarah Amodei, a special little girl in Baltimore's metal community. Sarah was born September 27, 2000 and upon birth was diagonosed with Congenital Scoliosis, Congenital Heart Disease, Kyphosis (twisted spine), Spondylocostal Dystosis (Jarcho Levin Syndrome), Thoracic Insuffiency Syndrome, Restricted Lung Disease, Pulmonary Hypertension, and many others that are just too much to list. In December of 2002 Sarah underwent an FDA clinical trial study to have a titanium rib implanted on her right side. This helped to build her chest cavity so that her lungs would have room to grow. Every 4-6 months, Sarah’s family travels to the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, as there are only 8 hospitals worldwide that perform the procedure Sarah needed. Sarah has since had two expansions of her right side and a new implant on her left side. This surgery is experimental and investigative so most insurances do not cover the cost of the surgery. The first implant was $138,425. Expansions thereafter cost between $25,000-$50,000.
