2013 Maryland Deathfest

Maryland and Baltimore are known for a lot of things, most which we will not discuss. The reason we're here is to celebrate music and the scene so proudly represented by the organizers of Maryland Death Fest. 10 years strong, local Metal scene-sters Evan and Ryan have parlayed their love of the misunderstood, some would say unworthy, and even forgotten, Death Metal and all of its sub- genres. Every year, fans and bands come from around the globe to step into something...Death Metal and it's diverse array of actual styles within or related to, right here in Baltimore. This year's line-up is as amazing as previous years but, as Evan puts it, "We try to outdo ourselves every year." I'd say from looking at the awesome line-up that, one, there are some legendary acts, and some you might not expect to find on a festival of this sort, but at the end of the day it's about the music, and the passion for something good, something off the grid, Metalhead's own little slice of Heaven on earth.

Quoting their website, "The concept of MDF is simple: to bring to the United States the best and most extreme bands the underground has to offer. Never conforming to trends, or being limited by genre restrictions, MDF is a showcase of what extreme music, both new and old, is capable of. With an emphasis on diversity, the festival brings together the very best death metal, grind-core, doom, thrash, hardcore, black metal, and experimental bands from all around the world. With bands from all over the U.S. and Canada, and exclusive fly-ins and rare appearances from some of the most in demand bands from Europe, Australia, and Japan, the diversity of the lineup is only surpassed by the diversity of MDF's rabid fan base, who annually travel from all over the world for a weekend of fun and music."

As of this moment there have been some changes in the line-up, Exodus will not perform but Sacred Reich will be filling their slot. Due to unavoidable personal reasons, Ufomammut have cancelled their appearance at MDF XI, which includes the tour that was going to be booked around the time of the festival. The band does have every intention of coming to the US next year for a tour, which would most likely include a date at MDF 2014, so hopefully that will help alleviate some of the heart pain this may cause you. Pallbearer have been confirmed to fill the vacant space on Thursday at MDF XI. We have a few changes to the billing to report. Feastem won't be playing MDF XI, as the tour they were planning has fallen apart, and they will not be able to make it to the US for any shows. Terveet Kädet (Finland) have been confirmed to play Baltimore Soundstage, but they will be playing on Saturday and not on Friday. Also, unfortunately, !T.O.O.H.! will not be making it to the states to play MDF XI. The band had a return show in the Czech Republic over the weekend, but they found that one of the brothers' illness is too severe for them to be able to play any shows at all from this point forward. Obviously, we understand their decision and wish them the best. CONTRASTIC (Czech Republic) have been confirmed as their replacement on Sunday at MDF XI.

As for me, I've never had the pleasure of attending, and couldn't fathom three days of awesomeness but Evan indicated, that if you cannot afford all three days, that single day passes were available, pretty much the only thing that's left at this point but you can go to Marylanddethfest.com for more info.

Fall From Grace Coming To Rams Head--July 13th
Written by Rio Heitt    Saturday, 07 July 2012 16:17    PDF Print E-mail

An afternoon conversation built anticipation of seeing a band on the rise and as Tryg, frontman, told me more about his band, it grew even more. Fall From Grace has been pushing their music with the utmost enthusiasm and drive to one day hit a level of success that will bring the music to the masses and, at the same time, pay the bills and fill their bellies. As I was told by Tryg, that is where he deems success to lay.

With a new album to promote, "The Romance Years 2012", and fans to gain, Fall From Grace are ready to put in the work required. The summer tour season has begun and they have already completed nearly two months on the road with Eve 6 and are currently touring with Saving Abel and Redlight Kings. This type of work is not handed to you it is taken. By being persistent and actively engaged in their careers these guys have been able to tour the nation without having outside management. To me, that is unbelievable. Inspiring is what these guys are and a band that deserves to be heard.

So make sure that you come out to Rams Head Live on July 13 to welcome these boys back to Baltimore. This is one show that will not disappoint. By the way, if you see a bald, brown guy in the crowd, buy him a drink.

This is Rio and I endorse this message.

Maryland Deathfest X

Ryan Taylor (left), and Evan Harting (right)

Break out your illegible black metal t-shirts and your patch-infested denim vests, folks- it’s Maryland Death Fest time again!  Now in its Xth installment, MDF 2012 is shaping up to be one of the best lineups yet.  I got the chance to speak with Ryan Taylor and Evan Harting, cofounders of the thing, and they gave me the lowdown on the genesis of MDF, and it’s evolution into THE mecca for extreme metallers, both in the states and abroad:

SW: So were you guys big metal purists in high school? How did the concept come about?

Ryan Taylor: Fortunately I started early – so did Evan – with listening to metal, but when I was younger, say, ten or eleven,  I had all the Metallica, Megadeth and Black Sabbath – mostly the stuff my Father exposed me to, which got me interested in metal to begin with. Then, at around fourteen, I started getting into the more underground stuff; discovering all the different subgenres of  extreme metal which, as we all know, can seem…endless. So Evan and I met in high school, which was at Parkville High, I guess I was probably sixteen and he was fourteen, and over the next three or so years we discovered that we had pretty similar interests in music, which made it pretty easy for us to work together and throw the first festival.

Evan Harting: Yeah, in high school I was (a metal purist) a lot more so than I am now; now I am a lot more open minded, but back then it was strictly death metal, basically. So that’s why for the first year of the fest, it was all brutal death metal, for the most part. That’s pretty much all we both listened to at the time. The concept for MDF came about  when we both worked together at this restaurant in Perry Hall, we were pretty active in the scene, we were at shows all the time and we had friends in bands like Dying Fetus and stuff like that, so about two years before we threw the first MDF we went to the last year of the Ohio DeathFest, which inspired us a little bit to start something similar… so when that festival  stopped, and then the Milwaukee Metalfest, I don’t know if it stopped or it just became no longer credible – Anyway, there was no longer anything along those lines happening anymore. So initially we just wanted to get some band from the east coast and kind of just have a one day thing. But soon after we announced that, bands from all over the place began writing, and it just sort of blew up, so the first year ended up being three days long, which we never intended.
