Shockwave Magazine sat down with Vains Of Jenna before their show at Bourbon Street Baltimore. Drummer Jacki Stone, guitarist Nicki Kin, bassist JP White and singer Jesse Forte talked about writing, touring and how they are happy doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing with their lives.
Shockwave [SW]: You guys have a new album, 'Reverse Tripped', with a bunch of really old songs that you cover. I am curious how a bunch of young kids like yourselves got back into the 60's and 70's to pick these songs.
Jacki: We all grew up with that kind of music. We got it from our parents, I guess. They are all into that kind of music and it's a natural thing. If we are gonna do covers, we'd rather go back a few decades to find the best songs.
Nicki: That was the time when the best music was made, I think, during the 60's especially.
SW: You did a good job sticking with the melodies, and putting your own spin on it. Do you think that will influence your song writing going forward?
Nicki: Oh yeah, definitely. I think the best music was written then, and it definitely inspires our writing process.
SW: You're touring to support this album through the end of June, finishing up at The Whisky on July 2. Is it still a big deal to play The Whisky?
Nicki: Well we've played there 100 times, and it's always a good time.
Jacki: It's cool when you think about all the bands who have played there, to be one of the bands nowadays who can come back there, and get a really good crowd there and it feels like a second home - it's really cool.
SW: After that, do you head back to Sweden, or stay in Hollywood?
Jacki: We head to Mexico in July, then back to Europe to tour for three months - Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Finland, all those - it's going to be nice.
SW: What do you miss the most about Sweden when you are in LA?
Jacki: You've got your friends and family over there.
Nicki: It's just home, you know? You can't really explain what it is, but it's where we grew up. Except for this guy [points to Jesse].
Jesse: I stayed with these guys when we went over to Sweden. I love Sweden, it's a beautiful country. I feel like that's my home too.
SW: If you guys could not play in a band, what would you do with yourself?
All: [blank stares] [shaking heads] [laughter]
Jacki: We've always played in a band. Where we're from in Sweden, you either play in a band or you play soccer. Or you have a regular 9 to 5 job. Something like that sounds very boring.
JP: We could sit in a bar and drink beer all day.
Jacki: And watch soccer games.
SW: Then you are definitely doing the right thing.
